Dr. Rebecca Martinez

Gerontologist

Dr. Rebecca Martinez is a gerontologist, caregiver resource specialist, and program development consultant. She has dedicated her education and career to improving the lives of caregivers and increasing awareness of the needs of older adults and caregivers in the workplace and at home. She founded Health & Senior Service Consultants in 1998. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of both the print and new E-magazine editions of Family Caregiver Magazine, whose initial publication she oversaw in 2004. She has served on the faculty of several graduate and undergraduate university programs in health services management, gerontology, and business management.

 

Rebecca holds a Doctor of Public Administration degree from the University of La Verne, a Master of Public Health Administration from Loma Linda University School of Public Health, and a Master of Science in Gerontology, also from the University of La Verne. She completed her internship in gerontology at the University of California Irvine’s Senior Health Center. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Management from the University of Redlands.

Moira Fordyce

Moira Fordyce, a doctor since 1962, is a geriatrician who for more than 20 years specialized in nursing home, home care and hospice. She currently has the following appointments:

  • Past President and Founder Member California Geriatrics Society - State Affiliate of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS)

She travels over America giving talks on geriatrics at medical meetings, senior centers and to lay people in other settings.

 

She practiced medicine for 26 years in America, and specialized in hospice, home and nursing home care. Before that she came from 14 years of a busy, diverse medical practice in Scotland and England, where she worked with the first professor of geriatrics in the world, Sir William Ferguson Anderson.

 

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Scotland and the American Geriatrics Society have both made her a Fellow in recognition of her teaching, research, writing and clinical expertise in geriatrics.

 

She has published many articles, for both health professionals and lay people. Her pocket textbook on geriatrics and end of life care, “Geriatric Pearls,” published by F.A. Davis of Philadelphia, is used in medical, nursing and physical therapy schools in the USA. Her chapter on “Ethical Issues at the End of Life” in an ethics textbook for physician assistants was published in 2008 (F.A. Davis, Philadelphia)

 

She is associate editor for “Eldercare at Home” (second edition 2004), a step-by-step guide for caregivers, available from the American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging.

 

She was Senator Barbara Boxer’s delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 2005, and has testified as an expert in Sacramento, before the CA State Aging and Long Term Care subcommittee, on behalf of the family/informal caregiver.

Joan Branin,

Ph.D.

Joan J. Branin, PhD, is Director of the Center for Health & Aging, and Professor of Health Services Management, at the University of La Verne. She is the founding chair of the Graduate Programs in Gerontology. Joan is an established and respected scholar in the fields of health services research, with numerous publications and presentations at international, national, and local conferences. Her research interests include Health Services Research, Evidence-based Outcomes Research, Cost-Effectiveness and Resource Utilization of Health Services, Medication Adherence, and Medical Decision-making. She has provided consulting and program evaluation services to nonprofit organizations; higher education institutions; and local, county, and state governmental entities.

Betty Perkins-Carpenter,

Ph.D.

Betty Perkins-Carpenter, Ph.D., president of Senior Fitness Productions, Inc., has made a life-long career of teaching people of all ages to be swimmers and divers, to be physically fit, and to be safe and secure in their activities of daily living. A former diving coach in the 1976 Olympics, she has coached men's and women's diving teams on the high school, college level and international level. She is the Founder and President of Senior Fitness Inc., the popular Perkins Swim Club, Inc., and the internationally well-known fitness program for pre-schoolers, Fit by Five, Inc.

 

Dr. Perkins-Carpenter served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and was a speaker at the White House Conference on Aging. She has appeared on national broadcast outlets and in publications as an acknowledged expert in fitness for senior citizens. She is acknowledged as America's Ambassador to Senior Fitness. She is the author of many articles and books, including the popular How To Prevent Falls: Better Balance, Independence and Energy in 6 Simple Steps now re-issued in a revised edition.  

 

Dr. Perkins-Carpenter received an undergraduate degree in physical education administration; a masters degree in child care administration, and a doctorate in health administration from Kennedy-Western University. She has taught at the University of Rochester, St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY and remains active as a consultant, lecturer, teacher and advocate on issues related to fitness and safety for senior citizens.

Trina M. Sauceda

Ms. Sauceda has over 25 years of real estate development experience in residential housing in the Southern California area.  A California licensed general contractor with the designation of Certified Aging in Place Specialist from the National Association of Home Builders, Ms. Sauceda has provided technical support for various aspects of construction claims and litigation for the past 20+ years. In 2005 & 2006 she served as the Orange County Chapter President of the Forensic Expert Witness Association utilizing her knowledge and technical expertise which includes: HAZMat, Light Construction Development Management and certification as a Mold Remediator.

 

With the eyes of an aging-in-place specialist, Ms. Sauceda’s construction expertise blends with Gerontology to offer low cost and low tech solutions that enable the elderly continued independent living through the implementation of realistic and affordable ideas. She is the co-founder of The Let’s Group, a non-profit which provides education and professional support in the field of Gerontology. Ms. Sauceda is currently working with VA Healthcare System – Risk Management in Los Angeles addressing the Safe Patient Handling & Movement Initiative with the goal of reducing employee work injuries.

 

Her education includes a Bachelor degree in Social Ecology and another in Fine Arts/Art History from UC Irvine and a MS in Gerontology from CSU Fullerton. Ms. Sauceda is currently pursuing and advanced degree in Bioethics and Healthcare Policy from Loyola University Chicago.
